Choosing the right piercing method: the hand-held ear-piercing device

For peace of mind, we always recommend taking the time to understand what to expect before you go to your piercing appointment. You’ll often be given an option when it comes to which piercing technique you’d like to use - you can either go with the needle piercing method, or alternatively, you might choose to go with a hand-held ear piercing device. In this post, we’re going to explore why a hand-held device could be a good option for you.

How does piercing with a hand-held device work?

Piercing with a hand-held device involves using a piece of medical equipment to puncture the skin with a stud earring. Many hand-held piercing machines use a spring-loaded mechanism to achieve this, but at Adorn512 we only use a hand-pressurized device, meaning our expert piercing professionals have full and precise control of the pressure that is applied.

Here's how the process typically works:

  1. Preparation. The piercer will use a marker to indicate the spot where the piercing will be made and will then check with the client that they’re happy with the positioning. Then, the piercer will load a sterile stud earring into the device and position it at the marked spot on the skin. If you’re feeling nervous about the experience, your piercer will help you to relax with some deep breaths and reassurance.
  2. Go time! When the client is happy with the positioning and ready to go ahead, the piercer will press the hand-held device and push the earring through the skin, creating a hole. At the same time, the earring's backing is attached to the other end of the stud, securing it in place.
  3. Aftercare. Your piercer will check in with you, give you a mirror to take a look at your piercings and inform you of the best aftercare regime to assist with your healing.

What are the benefits of using a hand-held piercing device?

As you can see from the outline above, using a hand-held device makes the entire piercing process very quick and simple. It’s a great option for people who are afraid of needles, and who might want the experience to be over as quickly as possible for this reason.

Another benefit of using a hand-held piercing device is that it’s very efficient at piercing the outer perimeter of the ear, so if you already know that this is where want to get pierced, then it’s certainly worth considering this option.

Which parts of the ear will benefit from using a hand-held piercing device?

We recommend using a hand-held piercing device for the soft-tissue outer perimeter areas of the ear, specifically the lower lobe and upper lobe. For the more intricate, inner ear piercings, we suggest choosing the needle piercing method.
