Getting your ears pierced? Here’s how to prepare like a pro

So, you’re finally doing it. Whether it’s your first-ever piercing or another addition to your growing ear stack, getting your ears pierced is a big deal. But before you march into the piercing studio, let’s talk prep - because, trust us, a little planning goes a long way.

From research to aftercare, here’s your ultimate guide to getting pierced like a pro.

Find your perfect piercing studio

Not all piercing spots are created equal. You want a piercing studio that’s clean, professional, and uses high-quality materials. Here’s what to look for:

  • A professional piercer. Someone certified, experienced, and not just using a piercing gun (more on that in a sec).

  • Sterile, high-quality equipment. Think single-use needles and hand-pressurized devices rather than piercing guns - which can cause unnecessary trauma to your ears.

  • Great reviews. If people are raving about their experience, that’s a positive sign.

If the studio looks sketchy or they hesitate when you ask about sterilization - run. Your ears deserve better.

Pick the right jewelry

Your first earrings need to be comfortable, hypoallergenic, and able to handle the healing process like a champ. It’s important to:

  • Choose the right material. Look for titanium, solid gold, or surgical steel to avoid irritation.

  • Choose the right style. Flatbacks are your best friend here. Their smooth design won’t poke or irritate your ears, making healing faster and more comfortable.

Timing is everything

Spoiler alert: Ear piercings take weeks (sometimes months) to heal properly. Plan ahead so you don’t get stuck in an awkward situation, like:

  • Piercing right before vacation - because saltwater and sunscreen are not your piercing’s friends.

  • Getting pierced before sports season.

  • Getting a piercing right before a big event - redness and slight swelling don’t exactly scream “glamorous”.

The best time to get pierced? When you have a few weeks of low-commitment healing time ahead.

Your pre-piercing checklist

Okay, you’re officially committed! It’s almost time to go to the piercing studio, so let’s make sure you’re fully prepped:

  • Eat something before your appointment. Nobody wants to be the person who faints in the chair.

  • Stay hydrated. Your body will thank you.

  • Skip the caffeine and alcohol. They thin your blood, which can make healing trickier.

  • Tie your hair back. Keep the area clean and easy to access.

  • Pick the right outfit. Avoid high-neck tops or anything that might catch on your new earrings.

Aftercare - AKA the key to a happy, healed piercing

Congrats! Your new piercing looks amazing. Now, let’s keep it happy and infection-free. To promote fast healing, we recommend cleaning your new piercing twice a day with either a gentle saline solution or a trusted piercing aftercare product (like our Ear Care Solution). Simply coat your cotton swab in the solution and clean around the piercing in a circular motion, removing any bacteria or debris that might have built up during the day.

It’s also important to resist the urge to touch your piercing unless absolutely necessary. The fewer hands-on moments, the better. And if you can avoid sleeping on your side while your piercing is fresh, your ears will certainly thank you for it.

You’re ready to get pierced!

And just like that, you’re fully prepped to walk into your piercing appointment like a total pro. Now go and enjoy your fresh new look!
